Fabulous. Deep and rich, very sweet and ripe, a complex wine, with roasted game, plum, blackberry, smoke, leather and grilled meat. Full-bodied, with a long-lasting finish. 3,750 cases made.

($29) Bright deep ruby. Very ripe, complex aromas of roasted plum and redcurrant, cassis, game, tobacco and smoke; offers classic Chateauneuf du Pape ripeness. Round, dense and sweet, although not currently as vibrant or complex as the 2000, perhaps due to the June bottling.

The classic, deep ruby/purple-colored 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape offers scents of garrigue (that Provencal melange of herbs and earth), pepper, black cherries, and kirsch liqueur. With admirable structure, it is an authoritative expression of a Mediterranean-styled red with an unmistakable Provencal character. Rich, layered, and full-bodied, it will provide ideal drinking over the next 14-15 years.

About This Producer

Pierre Usseglio et Fils has been a family-run domaine since Francis Usseglio released his first vintage in 1949. Today, with brothers Jean-Pierre and Thierry Usseglio at the helm, Pierre and Fils has become one of the top producers in Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

The vineyards comprise 17 parcels over 23 hectares on some of the best terroir in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The wine is vinified traditionally using natural yeasts, low doses of sulfur, and is aged mostly in old oak foudres. The results are world class wines that are testament to Chateauneuf-du-Pape as one of the world's most famous terroirs.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
