Bright, full medium ruby. Subdued but highly complex nose melds black raspberry, blueberry, plum, licorice, mocha, leather and tar. Offers compelling sweetness and density, with sharply focused flavors of black fruits, minerals and roast coffee, but comes across as less expressive today than the merlot, and still tight on the back half. But a wine of outstanding breadth and persistence, deeper and sweeter than the 2000. Tannins are substantial but quite fine.

Ultraripe, pushing it to the max. Rich mocha-laced black cherry and blackberry fruit. Hints of milk chocolate, herb and currant. Finishes with smooth, plush tannins and excellent length and complexity. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. 1,750 cases made.

The 1999 Proprietary Red Wine (a 1,725-case blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Merlot) is a successful offering. A dense purple color accompanies its sweet nose of creme de cassis intermixed with smoky, toasty oak, tar, and earth. While it leans toward a more austere, Bordeaux-like style, it possesses more glycerin, alcohol, and depth than most ripe Bordeaux. The finish exhibits chocolate and black currant flavors, plenty of sweetness, and austere tannin. Drink it over the next 14-15 years.

Every time I taste this wine, it continues to impress me. Parker must have had the flu when he rated it. Aged for 18 months in new French oak, this wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (69%), Merlot (27%), Cabernet Franc (2%), Petit Verdot (1%), and Malbec (1%). Deep dark purple red colored wine with gushing aromas of smoke, dark chocolate, black olive, Oreos, berries and cream, game, sweet toasty oak, and cassis. Lots of sweet fruit with moderate (but barely noticeable at present) tannins and finely balanced acidity. The wine finishes very long with dark chocolate and cassis flavors before tailing off to reveal enjoyable toasty oak nuances. Simply gorgeous wine.

About This Producer


Pahlmeyer started over 20 years ago when former trial attorney Jayson Pahlmeyer decided to turn his passion for wine into a career in Napa Valley. After studying viticulture and oenology at the University of Bordeaux, Pahlmeyer returned to the United States and produced his first wine (a Bordeaux blend) in 1986. Under the guidance of Pahlmyer, and current winemaker Erin Green, this reputation endures, annually establishing the estate as one of the finest producers of Bordeaux blends, Merlot, and Chardonnay in California.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend


Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
