Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 88(+?)

($35) Bright, dark ruby-red. Musky aromas of currant, plum, bitter chocolate and game. Intensely flavored but quite restrained, with juicy, slightly tart-edged red berry and licorice flavors and a faint greenness. Finishes firmly tannic and youthfully tight. In a restrained, Bordeaux style, and still rather closed after the bottling.

About This Producer

Ric Forman, a legend on the Napa wine scene with his integral role in developing the vineyards of Newton and the great Cabernets of Sterling, established his own brand with a debut 1983 vintage. This first wine exceeded anyone's expectations, and Ric has maintained consistent high rankings for his age-worthy Cabernet and Chardonnay, wines of "finesse" and "elegance." Forman also produces a second label called Chateau la Grande Roche.

Wine Varietal: Merlot

Merlot shares many of the same profile descriptors as Cabernet Sauvignon including plum, blackberry, chocolate and mocha. Bordeaux's Right Bank, such as in Pomerol and St.-Emilion, is the traditional home to this red grape, but it is grown all over the world. Merlot is either bottled on its own or is blended with other red grapes.
