Wine Spectator | Rating: 97

Rich, earthy, decadent aromas are intense and enormously concentrated, with sharply focused, currant, pencil lead, mineral, sage and dusty berry flavors that offer uncommon depth and concentration. Finishes with an amazingly long and detailed aftertaste. Should be a 20-year wine, with ease. 1,745 cases made.

The 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard (a 1,750-case blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot, and 3% Merlot) boasts explosive aromas of incense, creme de cassis, minerals, and flowers. It is medium to full-bodied, with great harmony, and a sweet attack as well as finish. This is a classic example of power and richness allied to considerable elegance. Those in the foreign press who accuse California of being incapable of producing elegant wines have obviously never tasted this Cabernet.

Good medium ruby. Highly nuanced nose combines black raspberry, coffee, mocha, leather and smoky oak. Lush, dense and sexy, with terrific depth of black raspberry, smoke, game and leather flavors sweetened by the 85% new oak. Still quite tightly coiled, in the style of the best '99s, with firm acids and superb persistence. May ultimately merit an even higher rating. The berries were small due to rain during flowering, said Araujo, with the result that the yield in '99 was much lower than that of '97.

About This Producer

The mission statement reads, in part, "To produce organically grown fruit and with this fruit make a singular wine of the highest caliber and distinction." By all accounts, Bart and Daphne Araujo are succeeding magnificently. The flagship wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon from their own Eisele Vineyards, is hailed by critics and desired by consumers in every vintage. Though first planted to Zinfandel and Riesling in the 1880s, the Eisele Vineyard has been the home of world class Cabernet since 1964. The low-yielding vines lie on property just east of Calistoga, where the vines are protected by the Palisades Mountains and cooled by the breeze from the Chalk Hill Gap. The harvested fruit is rich and concentrated, lending intense character to the finished wine. Under the direction of winemaker Francoise Peschon, Araujo produces four wines each year: the Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard; Altagracia, a second estate Cabernet; Syrah Eisele Vineyard; and Sauvignon Blanc Eisele Vineyard. In some vintages, a Viognier may also be produced.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
