A dark, rich, hearty style that has its decadent side, with potent earthy currant, black cherry, wild berry, mineral, leather and cedary oak flavors. Firms up on the finish, with rich, dense tannins. Patience required. 325 cases made.

There are 300+ cases of Merus's 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon (the second vintage produced by proprietors Mark Herold and Erika Gottl) which tips the scales with a well-hidden 14.8% alcohol. The saturated blue/purple color is accompanied by aromas of sweet licorice, high quality French oak, and black currant as well as blackberry fruit. The wine is full-bodied and rich, with elegance, sweet tannin, and a textured, impressive mouthfeel, it is one of the top wines of the vintage. This is a full-throttle effort to drink over the next 15-16 years.

Deep medium ruby. Sexy nose of roasted black raspberry, cassis, root beer, meat and spicy, toasty oak. Lush, dense, sweet and powerful; an outsized wine with rich flavors of black fruits and spices. Still, I'd like to have found a bit more verve and finesse. Decant this wine well in advance if you plan to try it now.

Wow! Slight ruby color on the edge and just beginning to show some mellowing. Dark jammy fruits with spice cake, cassis, blueberry, cherry, and toasty oak. Still a tannic monster with a 1+ min finish. Fantastic!

Boy do I love this Cab. Big, ripe dark red fruit. Tannins integrating well. Mouthcoating black raspberry, cherry liqueur and kirsch. Complex with notes of bramble and cedar. Good structure with a long finish. Too bad it's gotten out of my price range to buy a case!

About This Producer

The name Merus derives from the Latin noun meaning pure, unmixed, complete, and undiluted, especially when pertaining to wine. Merus winery in Napa Valley strives to represent this idea of absolute purity in each and every one of their bottles.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
