The 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin's dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by a big, sweet bouquet of blackberries, cassis, and a hint of kirsch liqueur. This sexy, full-bodied, opulent 1999 combines fat and flesh with a sense of elegance, purity, and delineation. Already delicious, it will last for 12-15 years.

($40) Ruby-red. Aromas of minerals, animal fur and smoke. Sweeter, fatter and fuller than the Tradition, but not yet showing its fruit component in the middle palate. Best today on the very long finish, which features broad, dusty tannins and a hint of road tar.

Purple hues in the center dissipating out to a light pink rim. Raspberry, wet earth, dried plums, and dried flowers on the nose. Overwhelming overripe red and black fruit on the palate are almost balanced by heavy tannins and a ton of acid. Definitely big and mouth filling and the finish is awkwardly forward on the palate - might need some more time to calm down.

About This Producer

Up until 1973, patriarch and proprietor Aime Sabon sold the entire production of this estate to cooperatives. In 1991, his son Christophe took over the running of the Domaine La Janasse, named after a family camp in Courthezon. The grapes that go into the "Cuvee Chaupin" come from a parcel of vines planted in 1912 and produce the pure, graceful, yet opulent and firmly structured wines for which the domaine has become renowned. Roughly a quarter of these wines are AOC Chateauneuf du Pape.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
