Wine Advocate | Rating: 97

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 1999 Hill of Grace presents fragrant notes of warm blackberries and black cherries with hints of menthol, dried thyme and sage, licorice, dark chocolate and black olives. Full-bodied, rich and powerful, it has firm, chewy tannins, crisp acid and a long finish. It is still very youthful in the mouth with lots of flavor layers. It is drinking well now and should continue to cellar through 2035+.

($350) Medium ruby. Rich, roasted aroma of cherry and plums, with exotic Indian spices and sweet, dusty cocoa powder. Juicy and plump in the mouth, displaying creme de mure, singed plum, cherry and tangy licorice, along with black pepper and bacon fat accents. Spicy, strongly extracted berry and chocolate notes mark the long, intense finish, which leaves a strong tannic impression. (Negociants USA Napa, CA)

About This Producer

The heritage of Henschke spans 5 generations and 130 years. It is one of the longest and most well-established names in the Barossa Valley, with fifth generation winemaker Stephen Henschke and his wife Prue continuing the exceptional tradition of producing quality wines. Close ties to the vineyards and land, as well as minimal intervention in the cellar, are what make the wines consistent winners among critics and consumers alike. While well-known for the "Hill of Grace" bottling, Henschke also produces a variety of other Shiraz and white varieties, almost entirely under screw cap. These wines promote the unique character of the Eden Valley region of the Barossa Range, which is a honeycomb of site climates with its river valleys and undulating hills. The wines are ready to enjoy upon release, but have such a beautiful balance of fruit, structure and acidity that they are worthy candidates for cellaring.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
