(this is 90% cabernet sauvignon, while the '98 is only 60%) Full medium ruby. Very ripe, fresh aromas of currant, black cherry, brown spices and smoky oak. Fleshy, dense and sweet, with lively, harmonious acidity giving the flavors excellent definition. Finishes with thoroughly ripe, broad cabernet tannins that coat the entire palate. Very suave wine, and amazingly good for a second wine.

The 1999 The Maiden (700 cases) is a more evolved, slightly lighter, less prodigious example of its bigger sibling, the Harlan Estate. The dense saturated purple-colored 1999 The Maiden exhibits an evolved sweet nose of cedar, black currants, licorice, and smoke as well as outstanding density, purity, and ripeness, medium to full body, and firm but unobtrusive tannin in the finish. It should drink well for 12-15 years, perhaps longer. As the wine sat in the glass, aromas of chocolate and cigar smoke emerged.

Intense and concentrated, a high-octane style, with currant, blackberry, earth and spice flavors. Finishes with a hot tannic aftertaste, but also lots of flavor, folding in oak and mocha scents. 766 cases made.

"The Maiden" is Harlan Estate?s second wine. In general, "The Maiden" is much more accessible than the grand vin but still has shown a cunning ability to develop and improve with time. The 1995, the first "The Maiden", is drinking beautifully today. Head to head, it recently embarrassed a 1996 Pahlmeyer Red. The '99 version does not compare favorably to the '95. Opaque black red colored wine with a few thin slightly pigmented legs. Sweet thick aromas of pepper, cassis, mint, espresso, smoke, and a touch of pruney tomato. Enjoyably thick and viscous with sweet rather foursquare cassis flavor and moderate tannins. Acid is a little lower than usual. The wine finishes with decent length and good fruit.

About This Producer

Harlan Estate, owned by Bill Harlan, is located in the western hills of Oakville. Harlan is known for its commitment to creating a wine that is a California "First Growth," on par with those of the old world. The entire estate consists of 240 acres, including a homestead and plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Consulting oenologist Michel Rolland and winemaker Bob Levy lead the production of Harlan's wines, producing two Bordeaux-style blends: Harlan Estate's namesake proprietary red and "The Maiden." These wines have been received to great acclaim by reviewers and collectors alike, commanding high prices and a competitive waiting list. Both wines are complex, full-bodied and have the ability to age for decades. With an opulent style, rich with dense fruit and elements of black currant, spice, and minerals, Harlan is both graceful and elegant, ranking it among the top tier of California Cabernet producers.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
