Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89-90

Full medium ruby. Highly aromatic nose of currant, plum and flowers. Lush and opulent but with good vinosity. Strong element of sweet oak to go with the fruit and dark chocolate flavors. This has very good depth and carrythrough. Finishes ripely tannic and quite persistent. Excellent for the vintage.

Grand Mayne has fashioned a superb 1999, with terrific concentration and a hedonistic, sexy style. This dense, purple-colored offering displays glorious levels of sweet blackberry and currant, fruit, a succulent, lush texture, full body, low acidity, and beautifully integrated wood and tannin. It offers a substantial mouthful of sumptuous St.-Emilion.

A little tannic still. Needs time. But will the fruit survive?

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
