Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 92

Impressive is the 1999 Shiraz Reserve, a 1,100-case cuvee aged 14 months in new American oak. The wine is a dense purple color, with a sweet, almost blackberry liqueur nose, and smoke, licorice, and oak in the background. Jammy and rich, with huge body, good purity, adequate acidity, and a long finish, this is an impressive, surprisingly large-scaled 1999.

Dense, deep and seductive for its plush texture and massive blackberry, blueberry and plum flavors--all of which pull together on the generous finish.

About This Producer

When the Watts family bought the 32 hectare Fox Creek Vineyard property in 1984, they were advised against planting vines as the soils in that area of McLaren Vale were composed of dense and heavy clay. The property had previously been used for growing barley and grazing sheep. Undeterred by the sceptics, they selected and planted fine quality cuttings and nurtured the young vines to fruition. Their labors bore fruit - extraordinarily high quality fruit - that was lovingly converted into wines of supreme quality. Under the skilled guidance of the winemakers, Fox Creek wines have achieved regional, national, and international acclaim and are now enjoyed around the world.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
