Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Spectator | Rating: 95

Savory, sanguine and packed with sweet cherry, strawberry, spice and tobacco flavors, this is mature, elegant, seamless, complex and long. A joy to taste, with overall harmony and fine aftertaste.

The 1999 Flaccianello della Pieve brings together depth, structure and considerable aromatic complexity. It is a gorgeous wine with all its elements beautifully in place. The 1999 isn't a huge, imposing Flaccianello from a structural perspective, instead it emphasizes a more classic expression of Sangiovese in its aromas and flavors. There is more than enough freshness layered into the fruit for the 1999 to drink well for a number of years.

About This Producer

Located in the picturesque Florentine hillsides just outside the pastoral town of Panzano, Fontodi is the spectacular domain of the Manetti family. The vineyards are located in the valley of the Conca d'Oro (Golden Basin) and enjoy a cool climate and marl-rich soil that gives the fruit a signature high-toned, red cherry profile. The wines are studies in the profound elegance and muted power of the ancient Sangiovese grape. The "Flaccianello" is one of the original Super Tuscans (originated in 1981) that uses 100% Sangiovese from an eponymous single vineyard of superior quality. This is an incredible collectible that represents a seamless juxtaposition of traditional Tuscan flavor and New World richness.

Wine Varietal: Sangiovese

Italyâ??s most popular grape, Sangiovese is the top grape used in Tuscany including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and many of Italyâ??s â??Super Tuscans.â?? At least 14 clones of Sangiovese exist which are grouped into the Sangiovese grosso and Sangiovese piccolo families. Sangiovese thrives in a warm climate and consists of over 10% of Italyâ??s vineyard acreage (covering almost a quarter million acres). Over the past decade Sangiovese has become increasingly popular and successful in California as well. Typical descriptors for Sangiovese include candied or dried cherry, citrus, leather, violets and tea.
