International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91

Medium red. Aromas of black cherry, minerals and graphite. Sweet and harmonious, with impressive vivacity and purity of flavor for '99. Strong mineral and graphite notes contribute complexity. Not overly fleshy but fresh and sharply delineated, with excellent intensity. A very sophisticated wine, showing well today.

The deep purple-colored 1999 Ducru Beaucaillou, which represents 60% of the crop, offers aromas of crushed stones, raspberry liqueur, and black currants. This sweet, pure, and harmonious wine possesses elegance, finesse, and multiple nuances rather than power, concentration, and structure. This is Bordeaux at its finest.

Firm and silky red, with spices, berries and cinnamon. Medium-bodied, with firm tannins and a medium finish. Very good Ducru. 17,500 cases made.

A lovely wine, great fruits with an undertone of fennel. Lovely silky tannins ... I still prefer Poyferre, but this was a lovely wine to drink

About This Producer

Located in the appellation of Saint-Julien, Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou is named for the beautiful large stones and pebbles that cover the vineyard. These stones create ideal grape-growing conditions, as they aid in drainage, reflect sun onto the vines, and keep the ground from drying out. These conditions create the "typical" Saint-Julien wine - elegant and smooth, with a long finish. The outstanding structure of these wines gives them great aging potential as well.

The Borie family has owned the estate for the past 60 years, and still lives in the chateau. The chateau itself is unusual for Bordeaux because the house was built directly over the cellar, which means the family lives literally surrounded by their wines. The estate's second wine is called La Croix de Beaucaillou.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
