The virtually perfect 1999 Maya is a wine of stupendous unctuosity, richness, fruit, and elegance. It is remarkable that the Cabernet Franc grown in these red volcanic soils can produce wines of such intensity as well as elegance. Notes of cassis, blueberries, blackberries, espresso, smoke, earth, and vanilla are offered in a full-bodied, profoundly concentrated and layered style. For whatever reason, the 1999 Maya revealed more forwardness than the Cabernet Sauvignon cuvee.

(a 55/45 blend of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc) Full ruby. Crystallized black cherry, violet, bitter chocolate and espresso on the nose; conveys great ripeness but also outstanding vibrancy. A silky, densely packed wine of great concentration and depth. Extremely young but not hard. Offers great structure and breadth. Finishes with very smooth tannins and great building length.

A wine of pure density and power, the 1999 Maya opens up gradually in the glass. Even with quite a bit of air, though, the 1999 remains big and burly. There is plenty of depth and texture in the glass, but less in the way of finesse. Mocha, spice, dark-hued fruit and imposing, coarse tannins mark the finish. It is fascinating to taste the 1999 Maya next to the pure Cabernet Sauvignon Maya, as the Cabernet Sauvignon alone show more finesse than the Maya itself.

Gorgeous aromas of blackberries and milk chocolate follow through to a full-bodied palate, with soft and silky tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Already a beauty to drink.

Darkly colored with a lean and racy nose of clay, concentrated red fruits, some toast, and baker's chocolate. Full and rich in the mouth with lots of taut power. Well balanced with a lengthy finish tasting of Snickers Bars. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc that is aged in French oak the majority of which is new.

About This Producer

From vineyards set 400 feet above the floor of Napa Valley, two critically-acclaimed powerhouse wines are crafted. Both the Cabernet Sauvignon (which includes just a touch of estate Cabernet Franc) and the Maya (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) showcase Oakville fruit in its most concentrated intensity. Production is limited to micro-quantities, making these wines sought-after prizes for collectors and wine enthusiasts alike.

Gustav and Naoko Dalla Valle bought their family estate in 1982, realizing their vision of producing world-class wine. The first vintages were 1986 for the Cabernet and 1988 for the Maya, which went on to earn a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker for the 1992 vintage. Naoko Dalla Valle has maintained sole responsibility for the vineyards and winery since her husband's death in 1995. French enologist Michel Rolland consults bi-annually on winemaking and blending decisions.
