($63) Full ruby. Highly complex nose combines black fruits, gibier, truffle, road tar, licorice and leather. Very intense and spicy, but still tightly wound, with a firm acid spine keeping the flavors under wraps. "Very interior wine today," notes Perrin. But one already senses the incipient complexity. Finishes with building tannins, a note of caramel and terrific persistence. This will need time.

The prodigious 1999 Beaucastel boasts aromas of blackberry fruit intermixed with cassis, licorice, roasted meats, leather, and truffles. While it does not possess much fat or precociousness, it displays definition and elegance. This is a full-bodied, concentrated, classic Beaucastel.

Wine Spectator | Rating: 90

Like some '99s, it's a bit leaner than the '00s or '98s, but it's well-made, with youthful exuberance of ripe fruit, toasted oak, grilled meat, smoked chestnuts and blood orange, ironlike notes. 16,665 cases made.

Dark black cherry red color. Aromas of raspberry jam, hoisin sauce, and a touch (very slight) of varnish. Good fruit in the mouth. Moderate plus tannin with slightly elevated acidity.

Medium dark ruby colour. Medium strong, with lots of black fruit and perfume. Medium tannin, medium acidity. Very complex and round, with lots of ripe black fruit combined with chocolate palate. Medium long aftertaste. Very nice effort.

About This Producer

Chateau Beaucastel, run by the Perrin brothers, is regarded as one of the best estates of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. At 131 hectares of vineyards, it is also one of the largest estates in the region. It is atypical of the appellation in its production techniques. It is one of three estates to produce and vinify all 13 grapes permitted under the regulations of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Also, unlike most estates, Beaucastel prefers to use as much Mourvedre in its blend as Grenache. As one of the first estates to practices organic viticulture, Chateau Beaucastel is often criticized for the influence of Brettanomyces, yeast that may contribute animalistic flavors to the wine. They are also controversial for their vinification practice of rapidly heating the incoming must in order to kill bacteria and extract color and flavor from the skins. After maturation in oak casks, the wine is bottled with light fining and no filtration. The house produces several cuvees, the grand vin known as Chateau Beaucastel. Their other wines include Hommage a Jean Perrin, Chateau Beaucastel Blanc, Roussanne Vieilles Vignes. Good values can be had by their Cotes du Rhone, Coudoulet de Beaucastel and their negociant line under the name Vieille Ferme.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
