Saturated deep red. Deep but reticent aromas of ripe cherry and spicy oak. Very densely packed but showing less flesh today than Rivetti other '98s. Quite unevolved but already displays a steely core of spice and mint. A powerful, rather musclebound Barbaresco that finishes with superb length and fine, dusty tannins. Rivetti's '98s should be long-lived.

The complex, elegant 1998 Barbaresco Vigneto Gallina exhibits aromas and flavors of pepper, cedar, black cherries, plums, soy, earth, and new oak. Full-bodied, pure, seamless, and well-balanced, with low acidity, this expressive, beautifully made wine should drink well for 10-12 years.

About This Producer

Founded in 1977 by Lidia and Pin Rivetti, La Spinetta has grown from a small Piedmont producer of Moscato into a extensive operation which now also crafts Barbera, Barbaresco, and Barolo. Along with their original holdings in Piedmont, La Spinetta has also expanded into Tuscany, where they produce Sangiovese, Vermentino, and other native Tuscan varieties. La Spinetta is run by Pin's three sons - Carlo, Bruno, and Giorgio. As the head of production, Giorgio is also the face of the company. However, all three brothers work together on the business with the same ultimate goal - producing quality wine above everything else. Giorgio's wines are both approachable and designed to be enjoyed with food, and all of the wines are produced from 100% estate grown fruit. As validation of his innovation and success, Giorgio's debut Barolo, the 2000 Campe della Spinetta, earned a 98-point score from Wine Spectator.

Wine Varietal: Nebbiolo

Big, dark, and bold, Nebbiolo is a robust variety with heavy tannins and a sometimes bitter profile. While areas outside Italy (Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, California, and South Africa) have begun cultivating Nebbiolo, the Italian region of Piedmont is where it reaches its greatest height. It is here, the historic home to Nebbiolo, where the finest Barolos and Barbarescos are produced. Many winemakers have compared this grape to Pinot Noir for its difficult growing habits and unpredictable cellar and aging behavior. Typical descriptors for Nebbiolo include roses, violets, tar, wild herbs, cherries, raspberries, truffles, and tobacco.
