International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89

Red-ruby. Blackberry, cherry, licorice, lead pencil and a flinty nuance on the nose. Bright and delineated, with good sweetness and thrust for a '98. Distinctive cigar box and tobacco flavors. Finishes firmly tannic, with persistent flavors of iron, tobacco and underbrush.

The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals that vintage's austere, lean style. It displays excellent cedar and black fruits in the nose, and flamboyant plum, blueberry and mineral characteristics on the attack, but then closes down. It is more elegant and less concentrated than the layered, persistent 1999. It will drink well over the next decade. With superstar vineyard manager David Abreu, and highly respected wine consultant Heidi Barrett making the wines, Jones Family Vineyard has already achieved a large following.

Medium body at best. Fruit appears to be fading compared to the year previous. Still a strong cherry component with light cedar. Might be at the end of it's life.

About This Producer

Jones Family Vineyards was established in 1996 as a family run winery with the singular focus to produce the finest Cabernet based wines from their special vineyards. Their location on a south facing hillside between St. Helena and Calistoga in the northern Napa Valley provides the ideal combination of soil and climate for the development of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vineyard manager David Abreu and winemakers Heidi Barrett and Thomas Rivers Brown have worked to maximize the potential of the unique location to produce two outstanding wines, the Jones Family Vineyards Cabernet, and a Cabernet blend wine, The Sisters.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
