Quite a bit of development at the rim. Neat, compact nose with lots of fruit and the merest whiff of cheese. Real lift. Nicely balanced. A bit like the 1995 in being very friendly and drinkable already.

There are 4,000 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon from Staglin's Rutherford vineyard. (They are in the process of building caves under the hills adjacent to the vineyard.) This Cabernet includes a touch of Cabernet Franc in its blends, is aged in 100% French oak, and is quickly becoming a classic example of Rutherford Cabernet.

The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon is very good. It is all charm and velvety richness, with plenty of succulence in the mid-palate, as well as a gorgeous evolved bouquet of black fruits, cedar wood, spice, and vanilla. There is enough acidity for delineation in this compelling, rich 1998. Drinkable now, it will evolve nicely for 15+ years.

Smooth-textured, with supple plum, currant, anise, vanilla and black cherry flavors that firm up nicely. Holds its focus and shows more harmony and finesse than most from this mixed vintage. 6,100 cases made.

About This Producer

Situated at the base of the Mayacamas Range on the Rutherford Bench, this sixty-one acre property has ideal soils, microclimate and location. The estate's potential was recognized by some of the first Napa Valley settlers and was planted to vineyards in the mid 1860's. Today the certified organic estate is home to the Staglins, fifty-one acres of vines, an underground winery, the historic homestead and a solar array.

Staglin is undoubtedly within the top tier of California Cabernet producers. In addition to the flagship Staglin Family Vineyard label, they also produce a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay under the Salus label.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
