Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Spectator | Rating: 94

A wonderful, masterful wine. Both firm and opulent, it displays a nice dig into the Rhone terroir as it brings out wet earth, mineral and an interesting, chewy tannin structure. A high-voltage drinking experience, with lots of fruit, spice and mocha. 16,665 cases made.

The 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape boasts a dense, saturated purple color, as well as an enticing, sweet nose of black fruits, licorice, and violets. Full-bodied, moderately tannic, and impressively concentrated, with a long finish, it will be at its finest between 2003-2016.

Outstanding wine, notes of cranberries, figs, earth and spice, plum. Delicious, probably at or very near peak

Minor bricking; noticeable meniscus. Very reticent nose - not giving up anything at all, not even after 60 mins in decanter. Mid-palate smooth and silky; finish is "sugary" (in a toasty, brown sugar kind of way). After about 1.5 hours in decanter, started to show more garrigue, spice and black pepper, but lost some of the silk fruit in the mid-palate. Was expecting more viscosity and fruit.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
