The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Coliseum Block is impressive. It boasts a dense plum/purple color along with surprising power and density for a 1998, and deep notes of cassis intermixed with licorice, underbrush, and vanilla. This nicely-textured, supple, opulent Cabernet should drink well for 10-12 years. There are only 180 cases of this Cabernet Sauvignon, which is made with the assistance of the well-known Oakville cowboy/rodeo star/winemaker, Nils Venge.

Mark Carter of Carter House in Eureka, California (a hotel with a truly phenomenal wine list. Its only real drawback is that it is in Eureka) has started a small vanity Napa Valley negociant operation specializing in Cabernet. Nils Venge is the winemaker for the venture. Deep purple red colored wine with lots of thick legs showing moderate pigmentation ? the color is really quite impressive for a 1998. Baker?s chocolate, cigarette ash, vanilla, and charred oak in the nose. Fruit is close to nonexistent. Acidic in the mouth with light tannins. Reasonably smooth but the wine is just void of any and all fruit flavors. Reminds me of a red from Graves. Not in any danger of going over the hill but I doubt more time in the cellar will do much for this wine.
