Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

Saturated medium ruby. Cool but complex nose combines black raspberry, blueberry, leather, game, fresh herbs and sweet oak; distinctly sauvage and fascinating. Less dense than the '99 but still lush and deep; flavors really build in the mouth. Complicating notes of tomato and game. Finishes very long, with impressively smooth tannins for this difficult year.

About This Producer

Not quite a newcomer, in terms of the powers behind it, Arietta was founded in 1996 as a partnership between renowned winemaker John Kongsgaard, his wife Maggy, and wine auctioneer Fritz Hatton. The Hudson Ranch (Napa/Carneros) provides the mostly Cabernet Franc of H Block and the Merlot and Syrah of Variation One. Make sure to try some of their first foray into the realm of white On The White Keys which is made from hillside Sauvignon Blanc and old vine Semillon.

Wine Varietal: Merlot

Merlot shares many of the same profile descriptors as Cabernet Sauvignon including plum, blackberry, chocolate and mocha. Bordeaux's Right Bank, such as in Pomerol and St.-Emilion, is the traditional home to this red grape, but it is grown all over the world. Merlot is either bottled on its own or is blended with other red grapes.
