Delivers marvelous richness, intensity and focus, with layers of spicy currant, coffee, anise, sage, cedar, mocha and mineral, and continues to reveal extra nuances, subtle flavors, new depths and dimensions through the finish. 1,994 cases made.

Bright red-ruby. Very complex, inviting, slightly roasted nose combines cassis, molasses, dark chocolate, espresso, herbs and mellow oak tones. Lush, sweet, dense and ripe, but with firm acidity and flinty minerality giving verve to the quintessential cabernet flavors of currant and fresh herbs. Finishes with dusty, sweet tannins. The best vintage of this bottling that come my way in some time.

I think we can agree that this is a Stag's Leap wine, and one which goes its own relatively subtle way. Deep, dense colour; intensely savoury nose and, although obviously made of fully ripe fruit, much less sweet and more 'French' than most Californian Cabernets. This spreads across the palate and still has definite chew at the end. A very serious wine with good prospects

Site Blog: The Wine Forum Astonishingly good, especially at 4 hours decant. This is everything I could have ever hoped for as many other Napa 1997 wines seem to have held up poorly. Crimson red the color is more youthful than I would have expected. The nose at first was odd, almost synthetic like. That blew off after an hour and continually added layers of nuance. The palate showed red currants, blackberries, creme d'cassis and black cherry with pencil shavings and cedar notes. The palate was balanced with a heady and super long finish sporting 1+ minute. By far the best Cask 23 I have ever had. #slwc #cask23 #stagsleap #1997 #Winiarski

Deep ruby red to the rim, an amazing nose of sweet berries and just shaved wood, a mind blowing mouthfeel of velvety textures and an amazingly long and delicious finish with lush sweet well integrated tannins. Love this wine, drinking great now. This was a 375 ml bottle. Have another 750 ml. Looking forward to drinking it shortly.

About This Producer

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is one of Napa Valley's most established and respected producers. The winery was founded by Warren Winiarski and his family in 1970 and it is best known for estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignons - CASK 23, S.L.V., and FAY. Over the years, the wines have become some of the most highly regarded and collected wines worldwide. They are fashioned to express classic elegance, structure, and ageability, and to reflect the place in which they are grown.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
