Beautifully proportioned, rich and complex, with ripe, concentrated plum, currant, black cherry, mocha, toasty oak and spice nuances. Turns smooth and silky on a long, elegant finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. 4,800 cases made.

The terrific 1997 Proprietary Red is the finest Viader I have tasted. It is a wine of exceptional finesse and elegance, yet undeniable richness and intensity. This blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon and 41% Cabernet Franc tastes like a top Graves from Bordeaux. Subtle spicy oak emerges from this dark ruby/purple-colored wine, along with scents of black currants, minerals, and lead pencil. In the mouth, earthy, terroir characteristics combine with sweet black fruits in this medium-bodied, rich wine. There is a juicy mid-palate as well as considerable grace and harmony in the finish. The tannin is largely obscured by the wine's outstanding concentration.

Full ruby-red. Deep aromas of black raspberry, plum, black cherry, redcurrant, tobacco, licorice and sweet butter; an initially dusty element dissipated with aeration. Plummy and lush; at once fat and stylish, with suave oak tones and a big chocolatey middle. Finishes with substantial, slightly dusty tannins.

About This Producer

VIADER is a leading Napa Valley winery estate established in 1986 by Delia Viader, and recognized for consistently producing high quality red wines. The estate is located 1200 feet above the Napa Valley floor just north-east of St. Helena on the steep, rocky slopes of Howell Mountain.

Since its inaugural vintage in 1989, the VIADER Proprietary blend has featured Cabernet Sauvignon with a significant component of Cabernet Franc. The second lable "V" is exclusively Petit Verdot. The estate VIADER Syrah is a blend of Barossa and Hermitage clones. DARE by Viader focuses on single varieties from select vineyards in the Napa Valley blended with their estate fruit. DARE Cabernet Sauvignon features fruit sourced from Lewelling Vineyards in St. Helena. DARE Cabernet Franc uses fruit from Stagecoach Vineyards in Oakville. DARE Tempranillo is made from a Ribera del Duero clonal selection sourced from the northeast side of the Napa Valley. VIADER also produces a very limited amount of Cabernet-based dry DARE Rose.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
