The 1997 Percarlo impresses for its pure seduction. It is also impossibly young. Dark red cherries, flowers and mint wrap around the palate in this sensual, inviting wine. In keeping with the qualities of the warm year, the 1997 emphasizes textural depth and richness rather then the more aromatic, firm style that defines cooler years such as 1996. The 1997 is drop dead gorgeous today. I imagine the 1997 will age faster than the 1996, but that shouldn't be much of a problem given the wine's exceptional balance. Layers of fruit built to the huge, textured finish. This is a decidedly flashy wine. I have always had a soft spot for the 1997. This bottle more than exceeded my expectations.

Ruby-garnet with blackish notes. Intensely spicy, sweet nose dominated by plum; expansive and impressive. Massive and mouthfilling, with plum fruit of almost exotic ripeness. Complicating notes of tar and licorice. Finishes with great density and an avalanche of sensations that defies description. There have been so many great bottles of Percarlo that it is hard to rank them, but this 1997 is surely among the finest of all.

Site Blog: Unidentified Appellation This is a profound example of Sangiovese that is beginning to unwind itself into a lovely drinking experience, thanks to a decade of aging. Notions of dried flowers, smoky tobacco, tarry cherries, rose water and truffles scintillate from the glass. The palate pumps out intensely endowed fruit in spades and really stretches its legs on the powerful, almost chewy, effusive finish that goes on and on. While I still find the Flaccianello to be the most classic example of pure Sangiovese from Italy, this is undoubtedly a worthy successor and is evolving into quite a beauty

About This Producer


This estate, with its ninth-century military fortress, is currently under the ownership of the Martini di Cigala family. It is located on the Siena side of the Chianti appellation, in the area known as the Gaiole zone. The estate actually began as a Cistercian monastery, and eventually became a Florentine fortification.

The Percarlo is a 100% Sangiovese production and is specially selected from 6 cru zones which have yields of less than 1 kilogram per vine. The selection of grapes is stringent, and in many years at least 50% are thinned out. The Ricolma is made from 100% Merlot and undergoes the same rigid thinning parameters that cover the Percarlo. It is probably one of the best expressions of Merlot found outside of Bordeaux and offers the collector a unique cellaring and drinking experience.

Italyâ??s most popular grape, Sangiovese is the top grape used in Tuscany including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and many of Italyâ??s â??Super Tuscans.â?? At least 14 clones of Sangiovese exist which are grouped into the Sangiovese grosso and Sangiovese piccolo families. Sangiovese thrives in a warm climate and consists of over 10% of Italyâ??s vineyard acreage (covering almost a quarter million acres). Over the past decade Sangiovese has become increasingly popular and successful in California as well. Typical descriptors for Sangiovese include candied or dried cherry, citrus, leather, violets and tea.
