Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 94

($60) Very dark garnet. Ethereal nose of wildflowers, especially lavender. Vibrant, sharply focused flavors of anise, chocolate, coffee and white pepper. Superbly concentrated, with a velvety mouth feel and firm, ripe tannins. A long, mineral-laden finish brings this poised and multidimensional wine to a deeply satisfying close. About This Producer

The varied and colorful history of the Costanti family is interesting on its own, but the wines are sufficiently compelling to rival it. In the early 1970s, Conte Emilio, with the partnership of his brother, Elvio, began the commercial Costanti Brunello production. In 1982, the grandson, Andrea, was lured away from his studies in geology and became completely dedicated to the production of stellar, traditional Brunelli. The wines are the epitome of powerful elegance and express a textured and layered complexity. The ripe fruit is balanced by a surreptitious dried fruit and satiny tannin/acidity combination.

Wine Varietal: Sangiovese

Italyâ??s most popular grape, Sangiovese is the top grape used in Tuscany including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and many of Italyâ??s â??Super Tuscans.â?? At least 14 clones of Sangiovese exist which are grouped into the Sangiovese grosso and Sangiovese piccolo families. Sangiovese thrives in a warm climate and consists of over 10% of Italyâ??s vineyard acreage (covering almost a quarter million acres). Over the past decade Sangiovese has become increasingly popular and successful in California as well. Typical descriptors for Sangiovese include candied or dried cherry, citrus, leather, violets and tea.
