Professional Reviews For This Wine

The 1997 Brut Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil possesses striking detail and depth in a surprisingly generous style for this wine. An inner core of perfumed varietal fruit emerges from the glass, along with expressive aromas of smoke, minerals, mint, flowers and licorice, all of which are woven together with extraordinary elegance. The finish is long, sweet and sublime. Everything about this wine speaks to elegance, but in 1997 Salon is also a pleasure to drink young, unlike the 1996 which remains painfully backward.

Subtle ginger, floral and citrus aromas build to flavors of lemon pie, honey and hazelnut. Elegant and refined, with a firm underlying structure and a long aftertaste. 1,667 cases imported.

One of the most eminent wines from 97. This wine is fantastically caressing and silky with a springlike, seductive grace. The sublime aroma breathes of lime blossom, lime and a hint of brioche. The flavour is lighter and more directly accessible than usual, but at the same time tremendously refined and crystal clear. A much better choice than the 96 for many years to come. I tasted the first bottle in a very unusual place with Didier Depond. At Ferrari in Maranella!

Sensational wine. Notes of honey and lime. Delicate and yet full of flavor. Enjoyed it while celebrating my husband's 50th birthday.

Tasting on the premise of Salon-Delamotte. Light gold in color. Slow legs. Lemon, Lime, Pear, Honeydew, Mineral, Acacia with a lot of white flowers. Medium/Full bodied. Silky texture. Medium finish. 1996 is better than 1997. But 1996 needs time to mature, so you'd drink 1997 before 1996. By the way, I tasted other champagne of Delamotte and I preferred Delamotte 1999 Blanc de Blancs to Salon 1997.

About This Producer

With production focused on just one champagne, consistent premier quality is the necessary mantra. Such is the situation for Salon, located in the tiny, quiet village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the highly-vaunted Cote des Blancs region of Champagne. The champagne hails from a 2.5-acre vineyard wholly owned by Salon and from 19 smaller parcels within Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, all of which are Grand Cru vineyards that receive the rarest of ratings - 100%.

Wine Varietal: Chardonnay

Arguably the best dry white wine grape out there, Chardonnay is grown all over the globe. In addition to being the backbone of fine white Burgundies, Chardonnay is also one of the three major grape varieties used in producing Champagne. Susceptible to a myriad of complications, Chardonnay berries are relatively small, thin-skinned, fragile, and oxidize easily. Chardonnay grapes can be sensitive to winemaking techniques and more difficult to handle from harvest to bottling than many other varieties. Some producers will use malolactic fermentation (where harsher malic acid is turned into softer lactic acid and carbon dioxide) to reduce crispness and acidity and add a creamy, buttery texture to wines. The "oaky" character of some Chardonnays comes from fermenting or aging which takes place in oak barrels. Once barrel-aged, Chardonnay may take on notes of vanilla or toast. While Chardonnay is produced worldwide, the best can be found in France, the United States, Argentina, Chile, Australia, Italy, New Zealand, and South Africa. Typical descriptors for Chardonnay include mineral, green apple, citrus, tropical fruits, vanilla, butter and smokiness.
