Thick and jammy, with loads of blackberry and plum character. Full, very sweet and round. Caresses your palate. Very fruit-driven, but lots of tannin structure as well. Sneaks up on you with the power. Was a bodybuilder, but now a long distance runner. Love it. '77/'87/'97 blind Port retrospective.

Saturated dark ruby. Superripe aromas of cassis, baking chocolate, flowers and walnut skin; hints at a more evolved tawny port aspect. Supersweet and velvety in the mouth; very concentrated, with ripeness just short of raisiny. Possesses decent acidity but could use a bit more verve. This lush, harmonious wine is deceptively approachable today; does it have the backbone for extended development in bottle?

For The Love of Port | Rating: 88

From a "leaking" bottle at Richard’s in Edmonton. I had heard many a story of there being a problem with leakers and had Dirk address this on FTLOP some years ago, albeit this was the first time I had the chance to experience one first hand. Very dark and opaque garnet color. Tight nose initially that with coaxing, offered rose petals and purple fruits along with a smoky and mint impression. Medium weight and excellent acidity that really stood out, along with ripe plum and prune flavors with ultra-ripe tannins. It evolved with a bit too much spirit on the finish that otherwise lingered for quite awhile, but overall this lacked synchronicity. Even after an eight hour decant, this remained a bit unforgiving, seemingly awkward and not what I’ve normally experienced with Niepoort’s ’97 VP.

Site Blog: The Wine Forum 4pm Saturday 2/14 - Initial Observation: Opened at for consumption on 2/15 for post dinner. Resealed with an airtight artificial sealer gizmo that pumps out the air. Ruby red with tinges of rust and brown. Very vibrant but a tad cloudy after 24 hours upright. Indeed has a lot of life left from the initial observation. Red fruits and spicy cedar on the nose. A bit of bite on the first taste. Not overly sweet at all. The sweetness is in harmony with the fruit, alcohol and tannins. I will try to buy vintage port going forward! Superb red berry finish! 2/15: 2pm: Alcohol still bites but the cedar and red fruits have enhanced and more of the classic port aromas come through 2/15: 9pm Had with dessert. The group loved it as most it was their first vintage port. You can tell the pedigree by the composition. Rich, complex, still very youthful. Overall assessment: DO NOT touch this for at least 10 years! It was delicious but still very tight and not as generous as I would have hoped.

Signs of past seepage. Dark and brooding nose, with aromas of dark cherry, vanilla, brown spices, and hints of red fruit such as strawberries. On the palate, notes of vanilla, brown sugar, smoke. I'm missing the fruit. Tannins are still strong and the alcohol doesn't integrate well. After one night open in the fridge corked and left out uncorked for four hours, the spirit dominates the nose. Fruit seems to have disappeared. Alcohol is still unintegrated, fruit is still missing, but tannins have now significantly smoothed out.

About This Producer

Niepoort's story begins in 1842 when Dutchman Eduard Kebe established the firm in the famed Douro wine-making region of Portugal. When he passed away in 1848, the business was left in the capable hands of his business partner, F. M. Van der Niepoort. Over 150 years later, Dirk Niepoort continues to make fortified wines using the same methods as his ancestors.

Niepoort has lead the way as one of the region's most innovative and creative winemakers of both fortified and still wines.

Wine Varietal: Port Blend

Port is a fortified wine produced in the Douro region of Portugal. To achieve a sweet, high alcohol final product, brandy is added to the fermenting juice, stopping fermentation while sugar is still present in the must. Although more than 80 different grape varieties are authorized in blending, only five make up the majority of Port produced, each adding a unique profile to the finished blend. "Port-style" wines are created the world over using a bevy of traditional and non-traditional varieties.

Touriga Nacional produces small, dark-skinned grapes with high tannins. These grapes give Port grip, body, and structure.

Touriga Francesca is thinner skinned, lighter in tannins than Touriga Nacional, and contributes fruit, aroma, suppleness and roundness.

Tinta Roriz (Portuguese name for Tempranillo) adds high sugar content, low acidity, color and fruit.

Tinta Barroca is known for producing wines of delicacy and finesse, with smooth velvety fruit. It brings sweetness and ripeness to the final blend.

Tinto Cao produces fine and complex wines. Unfortunately, its painfully small yields have reduced plantings to almost insignificant levels.
