Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 94

The opaque purple-colored 1997 Shiraz Seven Acres Vineyard offers a knock-out nose of cassis liqueur intertwined with cherries and licorice, great intensity and purity, huge body, and layers of glycerin that coat the palate. The wine's low acidity and gorgeous fruit make it irresistible now, but it will develop more complexity over the next 7-8 years, and drink well for two decades.

Dense and tightly wound, yet doesn't show the range of flavors and expression of the best Shiraz. Still, there's thyme, black cherry and wood notes, with firm tannins on the finish. 500 cases made.

About This Producer

Established in 1978, Greenock Creek is a tiny "boutique" Barossa winery with a production level of only 2,500 cases per year, owned by Michael and Annabel Waugh. Greenock Creek produces Shiraz, Grenache and Cabernet with grapes from two prime growing regions in the heart of the Barossa Valley: Seppeltsfield and Marananga. Michael Waugh makes 100% Shiraz, Grenache and Cabernet; each wine is created with fruit from a particular vineyard block. Yields are low, ridiculously so in the case of the Roennfeldt Road Shiraz and Cabernet blocks, where half a ton an acre is typical from the 60-year-old vines.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
