Wine Advocate | Rating: 93

The 1997 Bonnes Mares is medium to dark ruby-colored, and offers beguiling aromas of red and black fruits, stones, and earth. It explodes on the palate, with super-expressive candied red cherries, as well as licorice and road tar flavors. This rich, dense, gorgeously structured, powerful, and expansive wine is masculine and broad-shouldered, yet opulent and hedonistic. Medium to full-bodied, complex, and harmonious, it should be at its peak of drinkability between 2000-2010.

Good full red. Aromatic nose of rose petal, cocoa bean and peony. Large-scaled, rich and mouthfilling; lush and seamless. Has the uncanny sweetness of the vintage best bottles. An herbal nuance contributes complexity. Finishes quite long and ripely tannic. This should age well.

Very ripe, nicely complex, ever-so-slightly roasted fruit that displays a subtle floral note leads to round, medium-bodied, nicely nuanced and earthy flavors of obvious breed and fine finishing length. This is not an especially big wine by the standards of Roumier and his Bonnes Mares but it manages to deliver good elegance for the vintage and while it is approaching its peak, it could use another few years in the cellar first. A fine if not great effort that is developing a slight herbal note on the discreetly toasty finish. Consistent notes.

Amazing nose with strawberries, cherries, blueberries, sweet espresso. Leather and bacon bits on the palate. Still has firmish tannin's and an awesome finish that goes and goes. Absolutely excellent Bonnes Mares. 1997 continues to impress. Has plenty but could be even better in 5+ years. Be patient.

Vertical Tasting of 18 Roumier Bonnes Mares from Steven Tanzers Cellar with Steve, sponsored by Acker Merrill at Toqueville. Competely ripe and drinkable now. Typical 97, more forward, slightly sweeter. not with the grace and elegance of its siblings, but delightful all the same

About This Producer

Georges Roumier married his way into some of the best vineyard holdings in the Cote d'Or, back in 1924. He gained a wife from Chambolle and the vineyards as part of the dowry. Grand Cru blocks in Bonnes-Mares, Clos de Vougeot, Musigny, and Corton Charlemagne produce highly sought-after wines year after year. Christophe Roumier, Georges' son, has run the domaine since 1982, when he took over management of his family's 14.2 hectares of vines. He is regarded as one of the finest winemakers in the Cote de Nuit, one who strives to create authentic representations of each of his diverse plots.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
