Cedar, eucalyptus nose with hints of leather. Deep, dark color. Aged, red fruit flavor-a pure expression of California Cab. What I really enjoyed about this bottle was the silky, elegant mouthfeel. No sense of tannin, but full-bodied and balanced. Nicely aged texture and flavors but I think this has stuffing to last for 5-10 more years easily...Others didn't seem to like this as much; maybe there's some bottle variation, but this was an exquisite bottle.

musty nose with no fruit and too much oak. Even after a hour the nose was still dank and the finish was never even. Not sure what went wrong, but disappointing for '97.

About This Producer

Freemark Abbey crafts approximately 40,000 cases of wine each year. Currently they produce three Cabernets, including a Napa Valley Cabernet and the vineyard designated Bosche and Sycamore Cabernets. They also produce Merlot, Chardonnay, and Riesling, as well as several very limited production wines such as Viognier, Petite Sirah, Sangiovese, and Cabernet Franc. Given the right climate and harvesting conditions, the winery also makes a luscious late harvest Riesling known as "Edelwein Gold."

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
