Saturated ruby. Highly aromatic, fruit-driven nose of boysenberry, cassis, minerals, cedar, flowers and shoe polish. Dense, highly concentrated and sharply delineated. Fairly big cabernet for this label but not at all heavy. Dusty tannins spread out over the palate. A bit of cabernet sauvignon from the Eden Rock Vineyard under Dalla Valle really lifts this wine's aromatics.

Last of 8 bottles purchased on release. Fruit has dissipated leaving a very dry and grainy palate. Food helps but on its own very disjointed. Based on my previous notes this wine was drinking much better 4 years ago.

Dark red colored wine with no evidence of aging and thin lightly pigmented legs. A somewhat closed aroma (this wine was much more effusive a few years ago) of warm dark fruits, clay, high-toned baker?s chocolate, and light sage. Smooth and very supple in the mouth with persistent length. Tannins are well integrated with somewhat high, but acceptable acidity. The wine is in its awkward teenage years and should not be touched for another five years. 93+ points (this rating gives higher then usual credit for the possibility of increasing in pleasure with time ? it was much more impressive on release).

Etude was established in 1982 by wine consultant Tony Soter to produce high quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir sourced from top growers. The brand embarked on an estate-focused philosophy in 1999 with the purchase of a former pasture at the base of Sonoma Mountain. The sustainably-produced wines include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and five estate-grown Pinot Noirs.
