Tight and neat. Much more fruit than the 1998. Dense and very, very solid.  Masses of acidity. Quite long and with great length.

($64) Very ripe, rich aromas of tangerine, smoke and sweet butter. Big, frothy and full, with slightly exotic, creamy flavors of soft citrus fruits and nutmeg framed and lifted by strong minerally acidity. Very dry, firm and long on the finish, hinting at more flavor complexity to come with further time in bottle.

An almost overripe nose with oxide notes and tons of bread, licorice, and chocolate—all appearing right from the start. Big and mellow like the '90, but not as classic as the '95, '85, and '88. We'll see where it goes. Maybe it will dry up and stop in its premature growth curve. The first time I was disappointed, but the next time I was impressed by the power and the dark, fine red-wine-like structure.

Wonderful Champagne, still vibrant and vigorous. It has developed nicely in bottle, now obviously fully mature but still drinking well. Pale to medium gold color and ric, elegant fruit. Plenty of fine bubbles; complex, yeasty/creamy yet w/plenty of high notes; long finish. Drink over the next couple of years.

Wine Varietal: Champagne Blend

Three major varieties are used in a Champagne Blend: Chardonnay, which provides a smooth, creamy texture and Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, which provide depth and backbone. Most Champagne is non-vintage (NV), produced with grapes from several different vintages. Vintage Champagnes are made in exceptional years and must contain 80% grapes from that year. Champagne, France is the only region permitted to put "Champagne" on the label.

Blanc de Blancs: Meaning "white of white," blanc de blancs Champagne is 100% Chardonnay.

Blanc de Noirs: Meaning "white of red," is 100% Pinot Noir or a Pinot Noir/Pinot Meunier blend.

Rose Champagne: A small amount of still red wine is added during the blending process, creating a rose hue.
