Deep ruby-red. Plum and roasted nuts on the nose. Large-scaled, vinous and deep; thick fruit is given clarity by sound acidity. Very long and subtle on the finish, with serious but harmonious tannins. An outstanding second label, as good as most classified growths from St. Julien.

A terrific Clos du Marquis, and clearly of second or third-growth quality, this dark purple-colored wine reveals structure, brooding backwardness, and rich, expansive character. The wine exhibits plenty of sweet kirsch black currant fruit intermixed with high quality, subtle new oak, and steely, mineral characteristics. Rich and medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannin, this is a dazzling Clos du Marquis.

Thoroughly well-crafted red. Aromas of berries and asphalt with hints of mint. Medium-bodied, with a complement of polished, silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Second label of Château Léoville Las Cases.

Delicious wine with all the gorgeous complexity of St. Julien. Lighter than a Barton but beautiful. Incredible value. Aerated for 2 hours in bottle. Probably at its peak, but not declining.

Enjoyed as part of Bordeaux blind tasting and it showed well.

A mixed showing for this bottle. Still enjoyable, but this one was on the verge of cresting. Leathery cassis nose was still there, and the fruit showed ripe and in balance, but turned a touch raisin with time in the glass. I would advise opening and pouring rather than a decant at this stage, we may have pushed it beyond its comfort zone! So how about 90 for the wine and -3 for the wine lover!

About This Producer

The Second Growth classified estate of Leoville Las Cases continues to produce wines of exceptional quality, rivaling those of the First Growth producers. The wines are full-bodied, concentrated and complex, and have tremendous aging potential. Typical blends consist of over 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, with lesser amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and a small amount of Petit Verdot. Bargain hunters should also keep an eye out for the estate's second label, Clos du Marquis.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
