International Wine Cellar | Rating: 90

Superb dark ruby. Deeply pitched aromas of black raspberry, cassis and smoke. Lush, layered and sweet; already shows compelling inner-mouth flavor, surprising in light of the 3.6 pH, which is lower than normal for this wine. Still, the acids are harmonious and ripe. Longer and sweeter on the back end than the '97. Tannins are dense and mouthcoating but thoroughly ripe.

This is one of St.-Emilion's most impressively constituted and expressive wines. From its saturated purple color, to its soaring aromatics (pain grille, jammy black fruits, chocolate, roasted coffee, and smoke), this full-bodied, meaty, chewy, powerful wine is loaded with extract, sweet tannin for the vintage, and possesses a layered, multidimensional finish. It should continue to improve for a decade, and drink well for 15-20 years.

Just coming around, with tobacco, vanilla, berry and earth aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a medium finish. Slightly hollow midpalate.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective.

Decanted for two hours. Just now entering its drinking window. Rather tight and tannic. Plums; vegetal; fine, velvety tannins; a bit of funk on the nose, but not offensive. A more "feminine" style. Good cut - paired well with rib roast. Will continue to age for at least 10 years.

About This Producer

A Grand Cru Classe, Chateau Canon-La-Gaffeliere is located in the center of the St. Emilion appellation. Thanks to its location, it gets the climate of both St.Emilion and Pomerol, which means that it is more continental than the maritime Medoc. The name of the vineyard derives from the medieval word for "leper" which reflects the leprosarium that was located there during the 14th century. After much of the property was replanted in the 1950s, the Neipperg family purchased it in 1971. As a result of the efforts of Comte Stephan von Neipperg, the chateau received recognition from the likes of Robert Parker, who cited it as one of the most significantly improved wines over the last few years. The composition of the 19.5 hectares of vineyards is 55% Merlot 55%, 40% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. While the vinification methods are traditional, they do practice "micro-oxygenation," in which oxygen particles are pumped through the wine to enhance its color. This man-made practice is an interesting contrast to their philosophy of bio-dynamism in the vineyard.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
