Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89-92

Deep red-ruby color. Sauvage black fruit and mineral nose complicated by notes of game and smoke. Spicy and fat in the mouth, with bright flavors wines. Has size and intensity. Quite long on the palate, with firm but more evenly distributed tannins. A distinct level up from the Pruliers.

This wine is outstanding. Revealing a color verging on dark ruby, this (also from 60 year old vines) has expressive aromas of blackberries, cassis, minerals, and porcini mushrooms. It has intense, mouth-coating, and rich layers of sweet black fruit-drenched stones, and earth-like flavors, as well as a rich, broad and deeply ripe full body. In addition, this very impressive wine offers an extremely long finish loaded with fat and round tannins.

Excellent wine. Fresh cherries and raspberries, musty workboots, anise, sawdust. Excellent velvety palate structure with fine acid and a sharp finish.

Consistent notes. Pretty, med.-dark ruby to mahogany red color; full nose of bing cherries and red & black fruit, leather, spice & earth; firm on the palate with prominent acid, tannins are softening, plenty of fruit to provide balance; long finish. Very good but not fine - I've had better Burgundies from Gouges. Should continue to drink well for a few more years.

About This Producer

Founded by Henri Gouges, this domaine was subsequently developed by his two sons, Michel and Marcel. For the last few years, Pierre and Christian, the grandsons, have carried on the traditions of the estate. Pierre has a passionate interest in the care of the vines and Christian oversees winemaking. Uncompromising about quality and respectful of the typicity of the different vintages, he bottles after 18 months aging in oak-barrels, using a maximum of 20% new oak in the final blending.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
