Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 93

This wine sees plenty of French oak and is structured, with high levels of extract as well as tannin. It is built for 15-20 years of cellaring. The 1996 Command Shiraz is a big, full, powerful offering. A muscular, powerful wine, it requires another 1-2 years of cellaring, given its robust personality.

Smooth, polished and explosively flavorful, a generous mouthful of silken blueberry, plum and berry fruit shaded with spicy oak, all of it mingling deftly on the long, long finish. 1,050 cases made.

Deep ruby. Aromatic nose of dark berries, minerals and mint. Concentrated and chewy with extract, but not yet showing its underlying flesh. Slightly port-like ripeness. Somewhat aggressive finish features bourbony oak and notes of herbs and spices.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
