Rich, deep aromas of creamed minerals and toast are intertwined with ripe apples in the complex nose of the 1996 Cuvee William Deutz. This classically structured Champagne regales the palate with toasty apples. Rich, concentrated, and exceptionally long, it is fully mature and will particularly appeal to those who crave the complexity of wines with bottle age.

($158) Medium straw. Captivating aromas of beeswax, smoked meat, truffle, poached pear and ripe fig. Broad and fleshy on the palate, with a deep, smoky quality along with apple pie, lavender and subtle brown sugar flavors. As ripe and round as this may be, it's also precise and focused. Finishes with very good concentration. Should reward cellaring.

Here's a well-balanced, creamy '96, with plenty of the year's bold acidity, but also ripe, generous berry, floral and citrus flavors. Very finely textured and classy, right through the lingering finish. 6,670 cases made.

Already seductively creamy and deep, with delightful notes from Aÿ that with time will become more gamy and sexy. Long, creamy, uniform taste. The wine benefits from airing and the last glass is—at the moment—much better than the first. During the autumn of 2003, the fruit of this high-class Pinot Noir began to make itself known, like a rumbling thunderstorm in the distance.

About This Producer

Founded in 1838, the House of Deutz is located in the town of Ay, about two miles from Eperney between the banks of the river Marne and the slopes of the Montagne de Reims. Deutz has a long winemaking history and has been one of the region's major Champagne houses for generations. Due to their ability to turn out impressive cuvees year after year, the House of Deutz is often looked upon as one of Champagne's finest gems.

Wine Varietal: Champagne Blend

Three major varieties are used in a Champagne Blend: Chardonnay, which provides a smooth, creamy texture and Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, which provide depth and backbone. Most Champagne is non-vintage (NV), produced with grapes from several different vintages. Vintage Champagnes are made in exceptional years and must contain 80% grapes from that year. Champagne, France is the only region permitted to put "Champagne" on the label.

Blanc de Blancs: Meaning "white of white," blanc de blancs Champagne is 100% Chardonnay.

Blanc de Noirs: Meaning "white of red," is 100% Pinot Noir or a Pinot Noir/Pinot Meunier blend.

Rose Champagne: A small amount of still red wine is added during the blending process, creating a rose hue.
