Good fresh ruby-red. Pure but reticent aromas of dark berries and leather. Intense blackberry and floral flavors show an almost medicinal note of menthol. Strong acids leave it quite tightly wrapped. But finishes with very good length, and subtle, ripe fruit. A relatively low-pH wine for Clape, and in need of at least a few years of bottle aging. This should develop slowly, but it will never show the texture of the '97.

The deep ruby/purple-colored 1996 Cornas offers beautiful aromatics of jammy plums, blackberries, and cassis. The wine is excellent in the mouth, spicy, and medium to full-bodied, with exuberant, zesty acidity, and unobtrusive yet firm tannin. From a cooler year, this well-made wine is ideal for drinking now and over the next 12-15 years.

Impressively complex, mingling wonderful fruit and spice accents with black pepper, tar, cassis and olive. Dark and brooding, this full-bodied Northern Rhone red is amazingly ripe, sweet-tasting, seductive -- just plain delicious. So balanced, it's tempting now, but it will keep for years.

Nicely concentrated Cornas with a lot left. Can sit awhile longer and will improve. Ripe core of dark berry and blue berry. Notes of bacon fat, earth, leather and chalk add to the pleasing complexity. Still grip to the tannins. Opens up and softens with time in the glass. Delicious!
