Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 93

($242) Pale straw, with gold highlights. Leesy, buttery aromas of honey, orange and toast. Toffee apple, fresh apricot and exotic papaya flavors are accented by dense truffle and smoke. Possesses a wonderfully supple texture and good heft but there's ample acidity to keep it fresh and bright. Finishes spicy, firm and long. This will age well. This cuvee is a recent disgorgement, done in May of this year. (Wilson Daniels, St. Helena, CA)

Tasting these wines without dosage and newly disgorged, before they have come onto the market, is almost like being subjected to barrel sample. I might change my mind about this wine because it will most likely go through a metamorphosis in coming years. At the age of six and a half, this is a refreshing, mountain-stream-pure experience, with sharp apple acidity and bone-dry, almost stony mineral character. Such complexity takes many years to build up. Directly after adding the dosage the wine quickly became more accessible. At the end of 2003 this seems to be a creamy, elegant, and very charming Champagne in modern style. We'll have to wait a long time before the baby fat dries up and the nutty and autumn-scented complexity takes over.

This is assertive and grainy in texture, a big-boned Champagne that's powerful and intensely flavored. Biscuit, graphite, honeysuckle, peach and floral notes come together, defined by the firm structure, and last throughout the complex finish. Needs a little more time for the elements to harmonize. 500 cases imported.

About This Producer

With production focused on just one champagne, consistent premier quality is the necessary mantra. Such is the situation for Salon, located in the tiny, quiet village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger in the highly-vaunted Cote des Blancs region of Champagne. The champagne hails from a 2.5-acre vineyard wholly owned by Salon and from 19 smaller parcels within Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, all of which are Grand Cru vineyards that receive the rarest of ratings - 100%.
