The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon is as close to a perfect wine as I could hope to taste. This opaque purple-colored wine exhibits a sensational purity of black currant fruit, intermixed with a notion of raspberries, violets, and well-disguised sweet vanillin. Full-bodied, with remarkable intensity, exquisite symmetry, and a mid-palate and finish to die for, this is a compelling, astonishingly seductive Cabernet Sauvignon that can be drunk now, or cellared for 20-25 years. I may have done this wine a disservice by not giving it the big 3-digit score. As I have tried so hard to articulate in past reviews, what makes these wines so stunning is the black currant/cassis fruit. Screaming Eagle may be the most extravagantly pure and rich expression of cassis one can find...short of drinking cassis liqueur. There is an unbelievable purity to these wines, as well as phenomenal concentration and richness, yet in no sense are they heavy, ponderous, or out of balance.

Gorgeous aromas of blackberries, currants and lightly toasted oak. Full-bodied, chewy and round, with lots of fruit and a long, jammy finish. Lots going on. Reminds me of the 1992 but a little less structured.

Deep red-ruby color. Complex, fresh aromas of cassis, game and smoky, toasty oak. Sweet and silky, with beautifully integrated acidity. Dense, thick and fairly backward, with inviting flavors of roasted plum and tobacco. Very long on the palate. May eventually equal the superb '94.

About This Producer

Screaming Eagle Winery and Vineyards is a California wines estate producing limited amounts of varietal wine to the small quantities produced and high prices commanded, their wines are considered cult wines. The winery is located in Oakville, California north of the town of Napa in the Napa Valley.

Jean Phillips, a former real estate agent bought the 23 hectare vineyard in 1986 which was planted to produce a mix of varieties, most of which Phillips sold to various Napa wineries. With all white varieties but for 4,000 square meters, approximately 80 vines of Cabernet Sauvignon. Philips sought the opinions of Robert Mondavi Winery employees on the commercial potential of her wine before hiring Richard Peterson as a consultant and subsequently met Peterson??s daughter, Heidi Peterson Barrett, who became her winemaker. The 1992 vintage, through a combination of very low production numbers and highly positive reviews (wine critic Robert Parker awarded the wine 99 points), resulted in Screaming Eagle wine sold at unusually high prices.

In 2006 the estate sold to Stanley Kroenke. In an ongoing replanting strategy, the vineyard manager David Abreu is employed to oversee the process. The vineyards tended by vineyard foreman Jorge Delgado while the current winemaker is Nick Gislason.

The estate has gained unprecedented acclaim in such a short period of time and the wins can be found in charity auction and investment portfolios for unprecedented dollar amounts. The quality is undeniable and the production of an average 700 cases makes this incredibly rare and precious. To note, the 2005 vintage produced only 400 cases.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
