Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 89

Aged in 100% new French oak casks for 22 months before bottling, the 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon offers a dark ruby color, followed by a sweet, aggressively woody nose. The pungent wood dominated the wine's fruit, which lowered my score. Nevertheless, once past the oaky overlay, the wine exhibits fine ripeness, copious quantities of rich, chewy fruit, medium to full body, and wood tannin in the finish. I am not sure if everything will ultimately come together, but this is a flamboyant, oaky, spicy Cabernet Sauvignon that requires 2-4 more years of cellaring; it should keep for 15-20 years.

Superripe, sappy nose combines blackcurrant, chocolate and brown spices. Sweet, supple and chewy on the palate; already displays expressive inner-mouth aromatics. A fairly big wine, finishing with excellent length and thoroughly buffered tannins. Faint notes of roast coffee and game on the aftertaste.

About This Producer

In 1976, former stockbroker Dick Grace, along with his wife Ann and their children began growing Cabernet Sauvignon from their eponymous vineyard in St. Helena initially just as a hobby. With their first harvest sold to Caymus and subsequently bottled as one of the first single vineyard designated wines in Napa, they embarked upon the path to becoming one of America's wine legends. Besides maintaining the high reputation of their own vineyard and wines, the Graces have contributed to the development of many others, formerly employing Heidi Barrett, and providing budwood for Hartwell Estate, Vineyard 29, and Blank Family Vineyards. With limited production of and unrelenting demand for their wines, they also pioneered the mailing list/waiting list sales model prevalent among many cult cab producers today.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
