A powerful vintage produced a powerful wine, full-bodied and firm with complex chocolate, plum, spice and licorice flavors. It's a bit tough now, and should show better with time.--Spottswoode vertical. 4,860 cases made.

One of California's finest Sauvignons is consistently produced by Spottswoode Winery. With respect to the 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon, a beautifully scented nose of cassis, lead pencil, high quality new oak, and spice is followed by a wine with striking richness and balance. This dark ruby/purple-colored Cabernet possesses fabulous concentration, yet it never comes across as heavy or out of sync. A gloriously made, elegant yet powerfully flavored wine, it is accessible, yet capable of lasting for another 12-20 years. This sensational Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits the more complex, elegant side of California winemaking. Bravo!

Notably dark. Well balanced and integrated nose already. Layers of flavour ? some tealeaf again ? with real refreshment and delicacy. Bravo! Transparent and really lifted and elegant. Serious with that brine quality again. By no means obvious but rewarding. Appetising dry (as opposed to sweet) finish. (LM)

About This Producer

Spottswoode is a family-owned historic vineyard and winery renowned for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Established in 1882 by George Schonewald, the estate is distinguished by the historic Victorian home depicted on the Spottswoode label. Spottswoode was christened by Mrs. Albert Spotts, who owned the property from 1910 until its purchase in 1972 by Mary Weber Novak and her late husband, Dr. Jack Novak. The first Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon was produced in 1982, exactly one hundred years after the estate's founding.

The Novak family is committed to producing wines that faithfully reflect their grape origins. Each Spottswoode wine is known for its refined elegance, balance, and classic structure. Dedicated stewards of their property, the Novaks have farmed organically since 1985 and have pioneered the restoration of their local watershed.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
