Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 96

The newest release, the 1992, offers a dense purple color, and a splendid sweet nose of minerals, blackcurrants, toast, and spice. Opulent and rich, with full body, and well-integrated sweet tannin, this expansive yet graceful wine possesses layers of flavor that caress the palate. The wine is accessible, yet still youthful and unformed. It should drink well for 20+ years.

Shaded ruby but with some brick at the rim. Very complex and less obvious, this really opened out in the glass ā€“ vindication of keeping Harlan. Quite rich and a very dry finish ā€“ rather Cabernet Franc-like aroma - still some quite furry tannins ā€“ much more than one would expect nowadays. Iā€™m sure they pick later in the 21st century and would consciously avoid these more marked, quite refreshing tannins nowadays even though there is nothing wrong with them. (Don Weaver of Harlan Estate, by the way, says the most common letter they get is from a buyer who says they tasted a leftover the day after and how much better it tasted the next day.)

Currants, minerals and cedar on the nose. Full-bodied, with angular, chewy tannins and a medium finish. Starting to dry a bit on the palate, but a fascinating wine.

About This Producer

Harlan Estate, owned by Bill Harlan, is located in the western hills of Oakville. Harlan is known for its commitment to creating a wine that is a California "First Growth," on par with those of the old world. The entire estate consists of 240 acres, including a homestead and plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Consulting oenologist Michel Rolland and winemaker Bob Levy lead the production of Harlan's wines, producing two Bordeaux-style blends: Harlan Estate's namesake proprietary red and "The Maiden." These wines have been received to great acclaim by reviewers and collectors alike, commanding high prices and a competitive waiting list. Both wines are complex, full-bodied and have the ability to age for decades. With an opulent style, rich with dense fruit and elements of black currant, spice, and minerals, Harlan is both graceful and elegant, ranking it among the top tier of California Cabernet producers.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
