Blockbuster. Wow. Wonderful. Dark yellow with a gold hue. Full-bodied and very sweet, with thick and powerful fruit. The spice, orange peel, honey and dried apricot character goes on and on. Long, long finish.--1990 Bordeaux retrospective. 6,250 cases made.

Exotic aromas of truffle, game, dried fruits and tobacco; strong impression of botrytis. Powerful on entry, then very sweet (74 grams/liter r.s.) and very concentrated, with an amazingly glyceral texture. Powerful and very deep. Still some sulfur to be absorbed. One of the richest wines of this group, really thick with extract. Finishes firm, youthful and very, very long. This vintage was picked in a single trie extending from late October into November.

Bordeaux Book(1998) | Rating: 90

The 1990 was precocious and flattering, with its tropical fruit-scented nose, big, spicy, rich, high alcohol flavors, and a fine underpinning of acidity giving everything clarity and crispness. The 1990 will be drinkable at an earlier age than the 1989, but it will last just as long.

Deep gold, mature. Honey, apricots, dried peaches, and tropical fruits, along with good dose of spice. Heavy and syrupy on the tongue. Very nice!

THE biggest disppointment yet of my short wine tasting experience. 1990 is supposedly a phenomenal year fot any Sauternes but I do not know what happened to this Second-in-Command, after Yquem of course, Sauternes. As opposed a well expected massive nose of typical Rieussec, this bottle was simply muted with limited aromas of pine apple, pear and citrus. Only improved a little bit over time. Tastes like a young Sauternes with a bit too much boytritis in the finish lacking depth and balance. Cork seemed fine and the bottle did not appear to be corked or damaged in spite of the tasting! A real disappointment after thinking this will be much better than 1999 Rieussec which I enjoyed greatly.

About This Producer

Chateau Rieussec is one of the few producers of Sauternes who approaches Chateau d'Yquem in terms of quality and consistency. The vineyards of the two chateaux are actually located alongside one another in the communes of Sauternes and Barsac. Chateau Rieussec is one of 11 Premier Cru properties designated in the 1855 classification, and was originally owned by Carmelite monks pre-dating the French Revolution. Since then, ownership has passed through many hands, and the property was eventually sold to the Lafite-Rothschild group in 1984. Under the management of Charles Chevallier, the chateau has seen vast improvement, and is frequently cited amongst the best Sauternes in the world. Tremendously elegant, these wines are typically made from a combination of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle.

The estate produces a second wine, Carmes de Rieussec, and a third called Clos Labere, which undergoes shorter ageing in barrels and therefore may be consumed at a younger age than the grand vin. Finally, the estate makes a dry white called "R" de Rieussec, composed from many of same grapevines that produce their Sauternes.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
