Professional Reviews For This Wine

Rhone Book(1997) | Rating: 95

Pignan is an actual terroir or lieu-dit that sits to the west and north of the narrow band of sandy/clay soil that composes the Rayas vineyard. While it is a separate vineyard, in practice, Pignan is the second wine of Rayas. Its extraordinary showing in such recent vintages as 1989 and 1990 have led some skeptics to suggest that Reynaud may be putting his best juice in Pignan, using Rayas as a second label. This is untrue, but there is no doubting that Pignan, especially in 1989 and 1990, is a wine of extraordinary richness and intensity that can be purchased for less than half the price of Rayas. The 1990 Pignan is a thick, fruity ball of overripe black-cherry Grenache fruit. Thick and juicy, with high alcohol and glycerin, this knockout, full-bodied, port-like wine should drink well for another 15 + years. Last tasted 12/95.

About This Producer

This legendary cellar grew to its fame through the efforts of the late Jacques Reynaud and is now run by his nephew, Emmanuel. The reds are mainly Grenache and reveal a solid concentration that reacts to aging by extracting layer upon layer of subtle texture and complexity. Most people tend to rave about the Rayas, but in our estimation, the Pignan (which is made up of the cuvees that didn't make the Rayas cut) is a terrific second wine that is such an extraordinary value that it should be purchased in case quantities. Often this unassuming wine can eclipse many a top Chateauneuf.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
