Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89

Light copper color. Oily, pungent, expressive aroma dominated by pineapple syrup; a slightly dank quality quickly dissipated. Thick, resiny and intensely spicy in the mouth, though still rather tightly wound; deeper-pitched and honeyed, with an unusually velvety texture for this wine. Finishes slightly harsh, with a suggestion of phenolics and a bit of heat, plus a sweet note of toffee.

Abolutely fabulos Guiraud. It is a huge sauterne with low acidity and ready to drink and enjoy.

About This Producer

Located 45 km south of Bordeaux in the village of Sauternes, Guiraud was founded in 1766 and recognized as a first growth Sauternes in 1855. The vines are grown on a combination of sandy gravel and clayey sand, and the vineyards are composed of 65% Semillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc with an average vine age of 35 to 40 years old. Half of the fermentation process is done in new oak barrels and half is done in previously used barrels. Aging is done sur lie (on fine lees) for between 18 and 24 months. Annual winery production is approximately 100,000 bottles.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
