Professional Reviews For This Wine

Rhone Book(1997) | Rating: 90

The 1990 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde has turned out to be outstanding. It offers a sweet, expansive, smoky, bacon fat, cassis-scented nose, and rich, full-bodied, opulent flavors. It is neither as tannic as the 1988 nor as soft as the flattering, up-front 1989.

Beautifully crafted, aromatic licorice and animal notes. Firm and concentrated, offering plenty of blackberry flavor. Needs time to open up; try in 1997.--Guigal Cote-Rotie vertical. 15,000 cases made.

This wine is fully mature but my experience with prior Guigal Cote Roties indicates the wine can be held with confidence for at least another five years. Elegant and feminine in the best sense of the words.

About This Producer

Marcel Guigal - the so-called "pivot" of the Cote-Rotie appellation - is both an owner and negociant, and vinifies over 40% of all Cote-Rotie. His father, Etienne, started out quite modestly in 1946, and over the next decades the company has grown to encompass all that is best in the Rhone Valley. Not only known for the massive hits in Hermitage and Cote-Rotie, the Guigal name is synonymous with quality all along the scale, from the humble Cotes-du-Rhone to the Big Three - La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
