This extraordinary wine is backward and unevolved, but even neophytes will recognize its potential greatness. The opaque, saturated, dark purple color reveals no sign of age. The huge, smoky, oaky, blackcurrant, herb, and vanillin-scented nose only hints at what will be achieved with further evolution. Sweet, decadently rich, dense, highly extracted flavors are wrapped around a full-bodied, chewy, super-concentrated, moderately tannic wine that, ideally, needs 7-8 more years of cellaring. It is a 25 to 30 year California Cabernet Sauvignon that is just beginning to become civilized. A potential legend in the making!

Dark, ripe and intense, with a rich core of cedar, currant, anise and spice flavors, finishing with a firm tannic edge. Impressive for its detailed, integrated flavors and fine balance.--1987 California Cabernet horizontal.

(retasted at Mondavi) Very good full medium ruby. Currant, black cherry, roast coffee, cedar, leather, tobacco, truffle and black olive on the flamboyant nose. Sappy, youthfully tight flavors of currant and tobacco leaf, with a faint gamey nuance. Very ripe and rich but adamantly dry. Strong finish features big, ripe tannins. A superb bottle, far closer in character to my memory of this wine than the more politely styled example shown at the group tasting.

Dark color with aromas of earth. Somewhat dried out but still has amazing length. This was tasted alongside the 1986 and was remarkably similar though more austere and less fruit. Amazing wine for its age.

About This Producer

Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 and for decades has produced quality California wines that represent New World innovation on a global scale. The winery is located in Oakville, at the center of Napa Valley. The Mondavi family is well known for its dedication to research and experimentation in winemaking, as well as for helping establish the modern-day wine business in the post-Prohibition era. Some of Mondavi's innovations include the introduction of cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks and the use of French oak barrels in the late 1960s. Furthermore, Mondavi's technological innovations to improve the quality of wine and its focus on natural farming techniques have made a fundamental impact on the industry as a whole. For over 20 years Mondavi has been a leader in environmental responsibility, promoting sustainable farming and conservation.

The Robert Mondavi Winery produces wine in four categories: Napa Valley Wines, District Wines, Reserve Wines, and Limited Availability Wines. The Napa Valley wines are made from fruit blended across the region, whereas the District wines reflect the terroir of a particular appellation within the Valley. The Reserve wines are made from selected vineyard fruit that benefits from cellar aging. The Limited Availability Wines are unique varietal expressions (or blends) whose fruit is sourced from venerable vineyards throughout the Napa Valley and Carneros.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
