Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 91

The 1987 Cask 23 offers a huge aroma of coffee, fruitcake, cassis, oriental spices, toasty new oak, herbs, and black fruits that is profound. In the mouth, there is an almost endless sensation of voluptuous, velvety fruit, as well as an opulence that borders on decadence. Rich and medium-bodied, but soft and supple (almost deceptively so), this distinctive, original expression of winemaking should provide immense pleasure for at least the next 12-15 years.

About This Producer

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is one of Napa Valley's most established and respected producers. The winery was founded by Warren Winiarski and his family in 1970 and it is best known for estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignons - CASK 23, S.L.V., and FAY. Over the years, the wines have become some of the most highly regarded and collected wines worldwide. They are fashioned to express classic elegance, structure, and ageability, and to reflect the place in which they are grown.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
