Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Spectator | Rating: 92

Despite serious bottle variation, with some wines marked by sour aromas and flavors, the best bottles were elegant, with spicy, minty currant and chocolate character and smooth, fleshy tannins. Tasted four samples: Two were flawed, one was slightly off, but the last was in fine shape.--1987 California Cabernet horizontal. 4,740 cases made.

All three of the 1987 Heitz Cabernets are extremely tight, closed in, and unbelievably tannic and hard. The 1987 Martha's Vineyard possesses an opaque, dense ruby/purple color, and a shockingly subdued, almost non-existent nose. Only after five days of breathing did the famed mint and eucalyptus nose of the Martha's Vineyard Cabernet emerge! In the mouth, the wine is rich, burly, and full-bodied, but also tannic and unflattering to taste. To say the wine needs significant time in the cellar is an understatement.

Heitz' remarkable Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon has been a collector's favorite for over 40 years. Wine Spectator underscored this wine's legendary status by selecting Martha's Vineyard Cabernet as one of the Top 12 wines of the 20th Century.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
