Professional Reviews For This Wine

Richard Juhlin | Rating: 94

Tasted every day for two weeks. Always from a magnum. Unfortunately it seems that Taittinger has some cork problems here: a third of the bottles were corked. The healthy bottles were fantastically lush and Burgundy-like. The aroma contained truffles, autumn leaves, leather, overripe strawberries, cabbage, and red beets. The taste was homogeneously rich and sweet. A shining example of grape character. The regular bottles direct from Taittinger are perfect right now.

About This Producer

Taittinger, located in Reims, is the third oldest Champagne house and one of the few remaining independent, family-owned houses. It produces both fine non-vintage and vintage Champagnes. The prestige cuvee is the vintage Champagne Comtes de Champagne, named after the original Comtes de Champagne, who resided in Reims in the 13th century building subsequently purchased by Taittinger. The blanc de blancs version is produced from 6 Grand Cru sites in the Cote de Blancs. The Comtes de Champagne Rose is a blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, made by the addition of red wine rather than the saignee. Taittinger's style is elegant and aromatic with complex, creamy richness.

Wine Varietal: Champagne Blend

Three major varieties are used in a Champagne Blend: Chardonnay, which provides a smooth, creamy texture and Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, which provide depth and backbone. Most Champagne is non-vintage (NV), produced with grapes from several different vintages. Vintage Champagnes are made in exceptional years and must contain 80% grapes from that year. Champagne, France is the only region permitted to put "Champagne" on the label.

Blanc de Blancs: Meaning "white of white," blanc de blancs Champagne is 100% Chardonnay.

Blanc de Noirs: Meaning "white of red," is 100% Pinot Noir or a Pinot Noir/Pinot Meunier blend.

Rose Champagne: A small amount of still red wine is added during the blending process, creating a rose hue.
